Winter is Coming: How to Keep Your Plants Happy in a Melbourne Winter

If you’ve lived in Melbourne for more than five minutes, you know our winters are basically a mood ring. One day it’s 15°C and "not too bad," and the next it’s that gray, drizzly misery that makes you want to live under a weighted blanket until October.

While we’re cranking the split-system and living in our Oodies, our indoor plants are stressing out. Most of them are tropical at heart, and let’s be real—they didn't sign up for the "Melbourne Gray."

Here’s the lowdown on helping your green roommates survive the chill so they’re still alive when Spring finally shows up.

1. Chill on the Watering

This is the big one. Because it’s colder and the sun has basically gone into hiding, your plants aren't "drinking" nearly as much. They’re basically taking a long winter nap.

  • The Vibe: Check the soil. If the top few centimeters aren't bone dry, leave the watering can alone. Soggy, cold soil is a one-way ticket to root rot, and nobody wants that.

2. Chase the Light

Melbourne’s winter sun is pretty weak, and the days are short. That spot on the shelf that looked great in summer might be a total blackout zone now.

  • The Move: Shift your plants closer to your north-facing windows. Even a little extra light goes a long way when the sun is barely checking in for the day.

3. The Heater is the Enemy

We all love the ducted heating, but it’s a total vibe-killer for plants. It sucks all the moisture out of the air, which is why your Monsteras and Ferns start getting those annoying crispy, brown edges.

  • The Fix: Keep them away from direct drafts or vents. If the heater is blasting, try grouping your plants together—they’re better at staying "humid" when they’re in a group.

4. Skip the Snacks

You might think a bit of fertilizer will cheer them up, but honestly? Don't bother. They aren't doing any heavy lifting (growing) right now, so they can’t even use the nutrients.

  • The Tip: Save the plant food for your September "Spring Clean." For now, they just want to be left in peace.

5. Give ’em a Wipe

With the house shut tight and the heater blowing, dust settles on leaves super fast. That dust acts like a blindfold, blocking the tiny bit of sun they do get.

  • The Move: Grab a damp cloth and give those big leaves a quick wipe once a month. It’s basically a spa day for your Fiddle Leaf or Rubber Plant.
